Chapman to Replace All Elevators with Stairs

Issue 60 | February 2024

Several buildings on the Chapman University campus lack ramps, elevators, or any sort of accessibility accommodations. Students with disabilities have been forced to crawl up staircases in order to attend mandatory meetings or visit specific offices. Very few buildings are accessible, and half of those have handicap push-door buttons that don't even work. So Chapman thought, why not take it all the way?

In last week's email, Jerry Price wrote, "We realized the University had some accommodations, so we've moved to remove them. Chapman is all about authenticity after all. Just be yourself." Shortly, every elevator on campus will be replaced with a staircase, the sporadic ramps on campus will all be replaced with Wipeout obstacles, and the Disability Services office will be moved to the second floor of AF... oh wait. It's already there. Jerry Price's office is on the first floor (not a joke.)

But don't worry! If you're a student who needs special accommodations, Chapman has just posted a new work study hire for "people to disassemble wheelchairs at the bottom of staircases and reassemble them at the top." Sounds like you're in good hands!
